Sagging is a manner of
wearing trousers or jeans which sag so that the top of the trousers or jeans
are significantly below the waist, sometimes revealing much of the underwear.
Sagging is predominantly a
male fashion. Women’s wearing of low-rise jeans to reveal their G-string
underwear (the“whale tail”) is not generally
described as sagging.
The Origin - The origin was
popularized by hip-hop artistes in the 1990s. It later became a symbol of
freedom and cultural awareness among some youths or a symbol of their rejection
of the values of mainstream society.
It is often claimed the style
originated from the United States prison system where belts are sometimes
prohibited and there can be a lack of appropriately sized clothing, but fashion
historian Tanisha C. Ford of University of Massachusetts Amherst says this is
not definitive and the origins of the style are unclear.
Now, we take a look at the views
and reactions of some female folks towards this very reserved fashion style by
men, and which has come to gain some popularity and a stay in most urban
societies at this modern era.

See how they feel and what they say about sagging...

I don't like sagging for
anything. The reason is that at according to overseas report we are made to know that
ex convict sag because their trouser has no belt. I take my time to know this ‘cause
I hate it like sh*t! More so, it is a sign of being irresponsible. You don't
expect me to go out with my guy and his inner wears are showing. It is
embarrassing.
Olamide Solademi
And sagging. Isn't
fashionable to me. Nope, I don't like it!
Victoria
Yea I like it.
Yea I like it.

Sagging habit by boys is a
bad habit..........simply because sagging can only be seen on irresponsible
people, and it is a well known fact that it generated from prison yard, belt in
the prison yard were seized in order to prevent self killing (suicide)...with
this fact sagging can't be a character to be emulated.
Bimbo
As for me I see nothing bad
or wrong about it, but I think guys should do it responsibly.
But you know this sagging of
a thing has got class, that’s why I made mention
of the word "responsibly".
Blessing Livinus
I don't like it because it
makes them look mad.
Stella Ojo
It’s
not bad. Most homos (gays) do that. Not really bad. And it’s
also bad. It usually fits some people anyways.

Sagging originated from the
jails in the USA. It came about because belts are not allowed in the cells,
hence trousers/overalls which male prisoners wear droop down. So what they do
is to push the trousers down to below the waist, so that it sits at an angle
where it seems like a belt is holding it up.
What is an inconvenience, turned to a fashion statement? When these ex-convicts leave prison, they carry on what was obtainable in jail. I don't like it because, it makes a male individual seem irresponsible and unserious. Why should a boy/man sag when he is not in prison or has never done time there?

Society frowns upon such, and
they are considered as no-do-wells. He dare not try sagging if he is going for
a job interview or a formal event. No one would even look at you twice or
consider you for anything meaningful. Even if the guy is from a respectable
home, he does it out of wanting to belong and/or pressure. If they run into
trouble, he is roped right along them as a culprit. So, I don't like it because
it only portends and brings negative images and results.
Taiwo
I'm
not in support of sagging habit by boys, because it’s
not a sign of maturity! I believe it’s only irresponsible
guys that sag. You cannot be in a formal environment or gathering and sag
because people will look down on such a person. It might be called fashion but
it’s crazy. Not really advisable for sensible and responsible
guys looking at the history behind it.
A clear display of hip-hop culture accompanied by the sagging of trousers |
Damilola
My view is that classic men
don't sag their trousers.
Victoria Ilari
Responsible boys and men
don't sag only the irresponsible ones do and sagging is for prisoners not for
people who are free.

To me sagging is not
fashionable, it shows that the man or boy is irresponsible.
Kemi
Sagging is not fashionable o. If guys keep doing it, It will continue to affect generations. Though it is
called fashion, Not really acceptable here in Nigeria. So please try and encourage guys to stop sagging. Some girls don't like that. For me guys that are sagging are not responsible. And most times is not true, Most of them are responsible, just this fashion that is killing them.

Sagging is not in any way
fashionable. Is just a feeling of wanting to feel among. Of what they don't
even know about, showing their dirty boxers to the public.
Ebunoluwa
I personally feel the act is
not good enough. I feel bad when looking at young men's under wears, it's just
disrespectful . I usually attribute the act to being part of a dangerous
gang, cultists to be precise.
Sagging makes one look irresponsible. In fact,
ladies of
nowadays love men and guys who are moderately dressed. Like an adage
also said "the way you dress is the way that you will be addressed".
Guys, learn to pull up your under wears! No one want to see them...!
Blessing Adeyeye
No, it isn't fashionable. A
real man doesn't sag instead a man tighten his belt on his waist and tell the world he is a man and not a boy with some sense of maturity.
Anuoluwa
Sagging'z very bad. Like
extremely bad.
Rosemary
I don't like sagging. It
shows a sign of irresponsibility and immorality. Men or boys are not supposed to be sagging because it gives people a wrong impression about them.
Double Joy
The rate at which people sag these days is alarming. In my opinion, I will call it craziness and not fashion. Most of our youths look up to these celebrities and emulate whatever they do. And I somehow blame the media for exposing us to the videos of celebs who sag their trousers.
Sagging makes people think they (the men) are not serious and also find it hard to trust them, because a mature and reasonable being would dress properly and not sag. You can't see a well-educated or responsible person with proper upbringing sagging! Let's take a look at our doctors, engineers, accountants, bankers, lawyers and even our broadcasters, doing such? Can't we copy them than these celebrities?
In conclusion, sagging brings disrespect, and embarrassment as well. A man who knows that he wants to be great in life won't sag.
Sagging is craziness not fashion.

It portrays irresponsibility. It
makes guys look unserious and incapable. It portrays low self esteem and I-don't-care attitude. Also laziness.
Esther Oyaade
Dunno much about it but all I
know is that it's meant for prisoners, but men and young boys of today are using it
for their own fashion. It's because those prisoners don't have belts to hold their trousers, that's why they sagged.
You have heard that! Ladies have spoken.
It is now left to the boys, guys, and the men, to make a choice on whether to continue the sagging culture, or rather make amends to stop it.
Above all, let's ROCK our fashion world with every sense of modesty.
